USC President James H. Zumberge told the Rotary Club of Orange on Thursday that the university trains its students to make the world a better place.
Zumberge said sometimes “our students are accused of being ‘too career-minded.’ ” He added: “The fact is, USC students do tend to be focused on careers. Next to academic reputation, the reputation that ‘graduates get good jobs’ is the reason that most students give for enrolling at USC.
“What some students don’t realize is that for the next 4 years we are going to be challenging them at every turn to expand their view of ‘career’ from meaning the first job they can get right out of college to the real meaning of the word.
“By the time they graduate, we hope our students understand that a career is more than a job; it is the contribution one person makes over his or her lifetime as a professional, a family member and a citizen.”
Zumberge, in his luncheon speech, noted that USC maintains a teaching center in Orange County.
