UCI Women’s Team Fifth in Cross-Country

UC Irvine’s women finished fifth and the men seventh at the National Collegiate Athletic Assn. Region 8 Cross-Country Championships Saturday at Fresno’s Woodward Park.
Oregon dominated the meet, winning the men’s race with 38 points and the women’s race with 36 points. UC Irvine’s women had 132 points, the men 154. Cal State Fullerton’s women placed 12th with 347 points, the men 13th with 370.
The top two teams and three individuals--not on qualifying teams--advance to the NCAA championships.
Rick Wilhelm was UC Irvine’s top finisher in 31 minutes, 34.2 seconds, 20th overall. Freshman Carolina Plier was the top finisher for UC Irvine’s women, placing 16th in 17:31.8.
