College Football : Southwest Conference Roundup : Houston Records 16 Sacks to Bag Victory Over Wyoming, 34-10

Houston’s defense sacked Wyoming quarterbacks 16 times, including 6 drops by tackle Glenn Montgomery, as the Cougars defeated the 10th-ranked Cowboys, 34-10, Saturday night at Houston.

Cougar linebacker Reggie Burnette got three sacks, intercepted a pass and recovered a fumble as the Cougars (7-2) handed the Western Athletic Conference champion Cowboys (10-1) their first loss.

The Cougars, who have not played in a bowl game since the 1985 Cotton Bowl, are strong contenders for an Aloha Bowl invitation.

Wyoming, headed for the Holiday Bowl, entered the game as the No. 1-ranked team in the nation in total offense, averaging 536 yards per game.

Roman Anderson kicked field goals of 34, 32, 34 and 33 yards, including 2 in the first half when the Cougars jumped to a 28-3 lead. Houston’s Andre Ware threw touchdown passes of 15 yards to Patrick Cooper and 22 yards to Brian Williams, and Chuck Weatherspoon ran 3 yards for a touchdown in Houston’s first-half surge.

Ware finished with 23 completions in 40 attempts for 295 yards and 2 touchdowns.

Arkansas 25, Texas A&M; 20--Kendall Trainor kicked 5 field goals, extending his streak to 22 straight, and the defense contributed 2 scores as the 11th-ranked Razorbacks extended their winning streak to 10 straight with a Southwest Conference win at Fayetteville, Ark.

Trainor’s fifth field goal, an 18-yarder with 4:30 left, made it 25-14 after Patrick Williams and Ben Floor sacked Texas A&M; punter Sean Wilson for an 11-yard loss. The Aggies’ Robert Wilson scored from the 3 with 53 seconds left, but Kerry Owens recovered the onside kick.

The Razorbacks, with the Cotton Bowl bid locked up a couple weeks ago, became the first team to go through the conference unbeaten since Texas in 1983. Arkansas (10-0, 7-0) finishes the season against No. 3 Miami on Nov. 26.

“This is one of the biggest victories ever in this stadium,” Arkansas Coach Ken Hatfield said. “It was the biggest crowd ever, and we beat the team that has been to the Cotton Bowl the last 3 years.”

Texas A&M;, which is on NCAA probation, dropped to 5-4, 4-1.

Baylor 20, Rice 10--At Houston, Baylor’s Brad Goebel threw a 20-yard touchdown pass to Charles Perry and Gary Joe Kinne returned an interception 69 yards for another score as the Bears handed winless Rice its 16th consecutive loss, the longest current losing streak in the nation.

Kinne’s touchdown return, the third against Rice this season, came with 5:41 left in the game, stopping an Owls’ scoring drive.

Rice is 0-9 this season and 0-6 in SWC games. Baylor is 5-5 and 1-5.

Texas 30, TCU 21--Quarterback Mark Murdock ran for a touchdown and passed for two others, including a 60-yarder to Tony Jones, as the Longhorns (4-5, 2-3) snapped a four-game SWC losing streak by beating the Horned Frog (4-6, 2-4) at Ft. Worth, Tex.

Texas Tech 59, Lamar 28--James Gray ran for 3 touchdowns and Billy Joe Tolliver threw for 2 more as the Raiders (5-4) beat the Division I-AA Cardinals (3-7) at Lubbock, Tex.
