A man led officers on a chase up to 90 m.p.h. down Interstate 5 for about 30 miles early Sunday morning before they caught him after he left his car and tried to escape on foot near an exit in Oceanside, Orange County sheriff’s deputies said.
Deputies stopped Abraham Barrera, 30, on suspicion of drunk driving at the Avery Parkway exit in Mission Viejo at about 5 a.m., Lt. Harold Schaffroth said.
But before the deputies could question him, Schaffroth said, Barrera sped off in his pickup truck.
At the Beach Cities exit near Dana Point, Schaffroth said, Barrera crossed three traffic lanes and tried to ram a deputy’s car.
He missed, and the chase continued to Oceanside, where Barrera missed the Harbor Drive exit and veered into ivy, Schaffroth said. Barrera then tried to run away, but was arrested.
Barrera, who was not the registered owner of the truck, was held on suspicion of theft at Orange County Jail, Schaffroth said.
