Local News in Brief : Seamen Monument’s Dedication Delayed

Share

The planned dedication of the nation’s first monument honoring merchant seamen--originally scheduled for Veterans Day in San Pedro--has been postponed to May 22, Maritime Day.

Although the statue is complete, construction delays at the park forced postponement of the dedication, said Ted Kedzierski, president of the American Merchant Marine Veterans Memorial Committee, a Wilmington-based group of merchant seaman who commissioned the memorial.

Nevertheless, the statue will be unveiled at a Dec. 12 ceremony at John S. Gibson Park, where it is to be mounted alongside a circular pool and fountain.

The 22-foot statue depicts two merchant seamen climbing a Jacob’s ladder after making a rescue at sea. It will honor merchant seamen of all wars.
