Local News in Brief : School Board Seeks Report on Car Use

Share

The Los Angeles Board of Education unanimously recommended Monday that the Los Angeles Unified School District re-examine the use of district cars and gasoline credit cards.

The motion, introduced by board members Warren Furutani, Jackie Goldberg and Julie Korenstein, asked Supt. Leonard Britton to request such a study and “to return with a report and possible cost-saving recommendations and alternatives where appropriate.”

The motion was prompted by disclosures that the district is spending hundreds of thousands of tax dollars each year on more than 200 cars used by board members, district officials, school police and others. Those assigned district vehicles also have use of one or more credi t cards paid for by the district.

Board member Furutani said the district’s practice is not necessarily wrong but should be scrutinized in public “because we are talking about public trust and public money.”
