Local News in Brief : Fullerton : Hospital and Church Get State Quake Funds
St. Jude Hospital and Rehabilitation Center and the First Church of Religious Science have received state grants totaling $213,000 to help pay for repairs to damage caused by the Oct. 1, 1987, Whittier Narrows earthquake.
The grants--$115,000 to St. Jude and $98,000 to the church--were funded through the state Office of Emergency Services’ Private Non-Profit Program. To be eligible, the chief building official for the city of Fullerton had to determine if each agency qualified for funding.
Chuck Daleon, Fullerton’s chief building official, said grants to St. Jude will pay for most of the $150,000 in repairs made to the hospital’s parking structure.
The church, a local landmark built in 1909, had more than $250,000 in damage as a result of the quake. The damage included the structural failure of a chimney, dislodged bricks from the south gable and an unstable balcony.
In addition, the quake caused numerous stress cracks in the basement walls.
An estimated $1.2 million in damage was reported citywide after the quake. The church and St. Jude were the two hardest-hit structures.
