Bob Gilder birdied the last four holes Thursday on his way to a 64 that tied him with John Mahaffey for a 4-stroke lead in the second round of the $600,000 Kapalua International golf tournament.

“I didn’t want to let Mahaffey run away with it, but I sure didn’t expect to birdie that many holes coming in,” Gilder said after finishing in near-darkness.

“I don’t think I’ve ever birdied that many in a row at the finish,” added Gilder, who played his back nine in 30 and one-putted his last 10 holes on the Kapalua Bay course.
