Fresno State finished a perfect Big West Conference season with a 31-3 rout of Cal State Long Beach Saturday night at Fresno.
Long Beach quarterback Jeff Graham was sacked 10 times by Fresno State (9-2 overall, 7-0 in conference play). The 49ers (3-8 and 3-3) have one game remaining, against Nevada Las Vegas next Saturday.
Running back Kelly Skipper scored on a 1-yard run in the first quarter for Fresno State. In the second quarter, Darrell Rosette had a 50-yard touchdown run and wide receiver Dwight Pickens scored on a 42-yard reverse.
Steve Loop added a 19-yard field goal to give Fresno State a 24-0 halftime lead.
Long Beach’s only score came on a 24-yard field goal in the third quarter by David Vansteenkiste.
Fresno State finished the scoring with a 12-yard touchdown pass from Mark Barsotti to Anthony Williams.
Fresno State will face Western Michigan in the California Bowl Dec. 10.
San Jose St. 42, UNLV 0--Ken Lutz threw 5 touchdown passes and tailback Johnny Johnson broke Gerald Willhite’s single-season rushing record as the Spartans crushed the Rebels at Las Vegas.
Lutz completed 28 of 39 passes for 372 yards for the Spartans (4-8, 4-3).
The Rebels, who finish the season next Saturday at Long Beach, are 3-7 and 2-4.
The Spartans rolled up 609 total yards and 32 first downs, compared to 129 yards and 4 first downs for the Rebels.
Johnson gained only 35 yards in 10 carries, but he finished the season with 1,219 yards to break Willhite’s record of 1,210, set in 1980.
Pacific 21, New Mexico St. 20--Fullback Jon Grim rushed for 93 yards and 2 touchdowns as the Tigers beat the Aggies at Stockton.
Pacific finished 2-9 and 2-5. New Mexico fell to 1-10 and 0-7.
Grim’s touchdowns, both 4-yarders, put Pacific ahead, 14-3. But the Aggies came back to take a 17-14 halftime lead as tailback Marvin Johnson caught a 7-yard touchdown pass from Phil Vinson and added a 9-yard touchdown run.
