Deaths of 10 Palisades Youths

Share

A lot has been written in the local papers about the tragedy that killed four teen-agers from Pacific Palisades on Oct. 28. The stories talk about the accident, the fact that alcohol was involved, they talk about other young people who have died, but somehow they’ve all left out an important part of the story.

The accomplishments of their young lives deserve some mention too--not just the facts of their deaths. I know each of them was precious to his or her family and friends--I knew Cal Hoftyzer.

I watched him grow with my son from a gangly scout to a strong young man. He worked hard to become an Eagle Scout, Sea Scout and Emerald Bay staffer. He took the time to help the younger scouts and he always took the time to ask how you were. He contributed hundreds of hours to community service projects. He worked hard as a member of the Palisades Y and High School swim teams.

He deserved praise for all he did in his 17 years. When I remember Cal I’m not going to think about a car crash. I’m going to remember a sweet smile across a campfire leaning with his head on his mother’s shoulder. And, late at night, when the fire is banking low with the wind whistling in the trees and I hear young giggles coming from the tents--I’ll think of Cal.
