Local News in Brief : Fullerton : Eighth-Graders Win Awards for Essays

Ten Fullerton eighth-graders have received recognition from the Fullerton branch of the American Assn. of University Women for essays they wrote on American “Heroines of Struggle.”

The awards were presented to the Ladera Vista and Parks junior high school students by County Supervisor Gaddi H. Vasquez at a ceremony at the Fullerton Public Library.

First- through fifth-place winners from Ladera Vista were Mikerra Lynn Holtzman, Ryan Knouf, Tracie Davis, Cathy Collier and Cindy Fletcher. Winners from Park were Chaghig Minassian, first place; Hui-wen Hsiao, second; Elizabeth Bangs, third; Eddie Park, fourth, and Lisa DeLong, fifth.

First-place winners received $50 savings bonds and gold medals; second- and third-place winners received silver and bronze medals and fourth- and fifth-place winners received ribbons; all winners were given certificates.

Kathleen Huff and Noreen Stephenson were co-chairs of the AAUW chapter’s second annual essay contest. Judges were Martha Huff, vice president of Sentinel Media Inc.; Mike Mann, 4-H adviser with the University of California system; Joyce Mason, English instructor at Fullerton College; Barbara Stone, political science professor at Cal State Fullerton, and Davilynn Furlow, deputy features editor with The Times Orange County.
