NBA Roundup : Cleveland Has a Cavalier Attitude After Victory Over Celtics

Larry Bird is recuperating, but the Boston Celtics took another turn for the worse.

Mark Price scored 28 points and Larry Nance added 22 Tuesday night as the Cleveland Cavaliers ended a 10-year, 26-game road losing streak against Boston by beating the Celtics, 114-102, at Hartford, Conn.

“It’s just another road win for us,” said Brad Daugherty, who added 16 points for Cleveland, which is 4-0 on the road. “Our defense played well and that’s something we take pride in. With or without (Larry) Bird, they have to come to play every game just like us.”

Cleveland’s last road victory against Boston was a 115-101 win on Oct. 13, 1978.

Danny Ainge scored 28 points for Boston (4-6). Kevin McHale added 20 points, and Robert Parish had 16 points and 10 rebounds.

Portland 125, Seattle 104--Jerome Kersey and Kevin Duckworth scored 27 points each at Seattle and the Trail Blazers defeated the SuperSonics, who were charged with 8 technical fouls in a fight-filled game.

Two fights broke out in the second quarter. With 5 minutes left in the half, Michael Cage and Portland’s Steve Johnson squared off. Johnson pushed Cage and threw a right to his head. Cage was unhurt, and Johnson was ejected from the game.

Three minutes later, Jerome Kersey pushed Xavier McDaniel and was called for a foul. McDaniel kicked a cooler at courtside and was given 2 technicals and ejected.

Seattle Coach Bernie Bickerstaff, Alton Lister and Cage also had technicals, and the SuperSonics were given 3 technicals for illegal defenses.

Detroit 99, Charlotte 93--Joe Dumars scored 20 of his 26 points in the first half, and the Pistons pulled away in the third quarter to beat the Hornets at Charlotte, N.C.

Charlotte was within 67-65 with 3:33 left in the third quarter, but Detroit went on a 12-2 run, capped by Bill Laimbeer’s basket with 3 seconds left. Laimbeer scored 8 of his 19 points in the third quarter.

Robert Reid scored 19 points for Charlotte, and Kurt Rambis added 16 points and 14 rebounds.

Indiana 105, Milwaukee 91--Chuck Person scored 10 of his 18 points in the final quarter at Indianapolis, and the Pacers beat the Bucks for their first victory of the season in George Irvine’s first game as coach.

The Pacers were 0-7 before Jack Ramsay resigned and 0-2 with his assistants, Mel Daniels and Dave Twardzik.

Chicago 114, Sacramento 98--Michael Jordan had 32 points and 11 rebounds as the Bulls downed the Kings at Sacramento.

Jordan made 16 of 20 shots and added 8 assists, and Bill Cartwright scored 20 points.

Denver 141, New Jersey 106--Fat Lever scored 16 of his 18 points in the first half at Denver and the Nuggets rolled to their 15th victory in the last 16 home games against the Nets.

Philadelphia 130, Washington 103--Ron Anderson scored a career-high 34 points and the 76ers trounced the Bullets at Landover, Md. Anderson has 62 points in his last 2 games.
