Duarte : Hearing on Smoking Policy
The town whose motto is “City of Health” has set a hearing for Dec. 13 to consider curtailing smoking in many public places.
The city now allows smoking in most public facilities at the discretion of the city manager. He has specified smoking sections in City Hall but has no authority to regulate smoking in areas not overseen by the city.
In September, the City Council asked the Community Services Commission to hold hearings on a smoking policy for all public facilities. The commission has recommended that the city’s smoking ordinance emulate Pasadena’s.
The Pasadena ordinance is one of the most stringent in the San Gabriel Valley, prohibiting smoking in elevators, hospitals and health-care facilities, public meeting places, theaters and auditoriums, and public restrooms. It also requires nonsmoking areas in restaurants and offices.
