After finishing third in the fourth annual Bronco Classic last week, the Cal Poly Pomona men’s basketball team will be trying for its first official win of the season when it travels to face West Coast Christian at 7:30 p.m. Friday in Fresno.

The Broncos will play UC Davis in another non-conference game at 7:30 p.m. Monday at Kellogg Gym.

Pomona wrapped up third place in the Bronco Classic with a 109-77 victory over Manitoba of Canada after dropping its opener of the four-team tournament to Biola, 71-60. But the win does not count on Pomona’s NCAA record because Manitoba is not a U.S. team.

Still, Pomona Coach Dave Bollwinkel was happy.

“I’m pleased to get our first win, but I’m not pleased that we didn’t play in the championship game,” he said.”

Neither West Coast Christian nor Davis has played this season. But the Broncos are expected to receive a much tougher test from Davis. The Aggies are inexperienced, though, with three freshmen and two sophomores among their expected starters, including 6-8 sophomore center Pat Chylinski.

Pomona was led on offense in its first two games by newcomers Jim Skinner and D. J. Norman at guard. Skinner, a 6-3 junior who transferred from Citrus College, is averaging 16 points. Norman, a 6-1 freshman from Fairfield in Northern California, is averaging 10 points.

The Broncos also start forwards Forrest Barnes (6-5), who averages 7 rebounds, and Nate Macon (6-3) and Matt Sample (6-5) at center.

Mike McKernan of the University of La Verne and Dan Daley of Pomona-Pitzer have been named most valuable players on the All-Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference all-star football team.

Daley, a wide receiver, was selected the most valuable offensive player. McKernan, a 5-11 and 231-pound linebacker, was defensive MVP.

The 6-0 and 196 Daley, who caught 54 passes for 543 yards as a senior, completed his collegiate career as the all-time NCAA Division III leader in receptions.

Daley was the only player from Pomona-Pitzer named to the first team. Claremont-Mudd-Scripps placed six players on the team and La Verne three.

Claremont (3-6) placed running back Reed Pangborn, wide receiver Darin Carlsen, lineman Greg Jordan (6-1, 240) and place-kicker Drew Buccino on the first team offense and lineman Rory Wilson (6-2, 245) and defensive back Mike McCorkle on the first team defense.

In addition to McKernan, La Verne (4-5) was represented on the first team by tight end John Kusleika (6-5, 235) and defensive back Dion Powell.

Another first team selection was quarterback Tony Werbelow of Occidental, a former Arcadia High standout.

Outside hitter Tricia Wright, who led the University of La Verne women’s volleyball team to the NCAA Division III West Regional finals, has been named to the Division III All-American second team selected by the American Volleyball Coaches Assn.

The senior, who was one of the team leaders with 259 kills, 77 digs and 24 blocks during the regular season, had recently been selected as the Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference most valuable player.

La Verne’s Jim Paschal has been selected the Division III West Region coach of the year. Paschal has a 14-year record of 242-168.
