NBA Roundup : Mavericks, Blackman Stop Hawks

Rolando Blackman made 4 free throws in the final 30 seconds as the Dallas Mavericks beat the Atlanta Hawks, 100-95, Friday night at Dallas.

It was the sixth victory in 7 games for the Mavericks. Atlanta lost its third straight.

With the score 98-95, Atlanta’s Dudley Bradley missed a 3-pointer and Dallas’ Sam Perkins made 2 free throws.

Derek Harper, who scored 28 points for Dallas, said he couldn’t take the tension while Blackman was taking his foul shots.

“I knew Ro was going to make them, but I just couldn’t watch,” said Harper, who had his fourth straight game with 20 points or more. “I was going to find out from the crowd reaction.”

Dominique Wilkins scored 26 points for Atlanta, and Blackman scored 20 for the Mavericks.

Boston 115, Milwaukee 96--At Boston, Kevin McHale scored 27 points and Danny Ainge 20 as the Celtics recorded their ninth straight regular-season home victory over the Bucks.

Boston (6-6) built a 59-48 halftime lead and increased it to 89-68 in the third quarter. Milwaukee, which has lost 4 of 5, pulled within 91-81 by scoring 8 straight points to start the fourth quarter before Boston put its starters back in.

Phoenix 110, Seattle 105--Armon Gilliam scored 9 of his 29 points in the fourth quarter, including a decisive jumper with 36 seconds remaining, and the Suns beat the SuperSonics at Phoenix to snap a 3-game losing streak.

Dale Ellis scored 28 for Seattle.

Utah 115, San Antonio 95--Thurl Bailey scored 16 of his 30 points in the second quarter at Salt Lake City as the Jazz won its seventh straight. Mark Eaton had 14 points, 17 rebounds and 9 blocks for the Jazz.

Greg Anderson scored 24 points for the Spurs.

Washington 106, Indiana 101--Jeff Malone scored 26 points and Bernard King 25, with each scoring 11 in the fourth quarter, as the Bullets won at Indianapolis.

Indiana, which led by 16 in the first quarter, was ahead, 89-83, before the Bullets went on a 9-2 run. Terry Catledge made a layup to give the Bullets the lead for good.

Catledge finished with 18 points and 15 rebounds for the Bullets. Chuck Person scored 24 for the Pacers.

Philadelphia 123, Charlotte 116--Charles Barkley scored 37 points and Cliff Robinson 23 as the 76ers rallied in the final 5 minutes at Philadelphia to win their third straight.

Robert Reid’s jumper with 4:52 remaining gave the Hornets a 114-106 lead. Philadelphia then scored 12 straight points to start a 17-2 run.

Kelly Tripucka scored 33 and Reid 27 for the Hornets (2-9).

Portland 111, Houston 94--Kevin Duckworth had 27 points to lead the Trail Blazers at Portland. Because of foul trouble, Houston’s Akeem Olajuwon played only 19 minutes and had only 10 points and 6 rebounds.

Otis Thorpe scored 16 points for Houston.
