Augustana Defeats Wittenberg
Mike Hesler set an NCAA Division III playoff record with a 99-yard interception return that opened the scoring as Augustana (Ill.) defeated Wittenberg, 28-14, Saturday in a division quarterfinal playoff game at Springfield, Ohio.
Hesler intercepted another pass late in the game on the Augustana 10-yard line to stop Wittenberg’s final scoring threat.
In other Division III quarterfinals:
Rob Phipps kicked a 29-yard field goal with 6 seconds remaining to lift Central Iowa past Wisconsin Whitewater, 16-13, at Whitewater, Wis.
Paul Parker ran 16 yards for a touchdown with 8:06 left to give Ithaca College a 24-17 win over Cortland State at Ithaca, N.Y. Cortland’s Gareth Grayson ran for 227 yards in 39 carries.
At Ferrum, Va., quarterback Phil Jones ran for 2 touchdowns and passed for 2 more as Ferrum downed Moravian, 49-28.
Ferrum plays Itahca next Saturday, while Central Iowa faces Augustana.
