The Pittsburgh Pirates made room on their roster for pitcher Bob Walk by trading utilityman Denny Gonzalez to the Cleveland Indians for a player to be named.
Cleveland also learned free-agent shortstop Scott Fletcher would not sign with the team.
“We offered a contract in excess of $4 million over 3 years and, in addition, offered to meet and exceed any other contract offer he may receive,” Indian President Hank Peters said. “Despite this, he has elected not to join the Indians.”
