USIU Uses a Balanced Attack to Earn an Easy Victory, 112-76

Five players scored in double figures as U.S. International University routed Maryland Eastern Shore, 112-76, at Golden Hall Monday night. Forward Gary Williams and guard Steve Smith had 19 points each to lead the Gulls (2-0).

USIU scored 67 points in the second half to break open the game after leading by 12 at halftime. The Gulls shot 52% from the field and 55% from 3-point range. Demetrius Laffitte had 13 points and 10 rebounds as 11 of the 12 Gulls scored. Harold Lane led Maryland-Eastern Shore (0-3) with 14 points. USIU opens a 10-game trip at USC (3-0) tonight.

Zack Jones scored 18 points, but San Diego-based Athletes in Action lost at Oregon State, 84-81. It was the 14th consecutive loss for AIA (6-19). Lorenzo Romar missed a 3-pointer at the final buzzer for AIA.

FOOTBALL

Senior tailback Paul Hewitt was the only San Diego State player named to the All-Western Athletic Conference football team.

Hewitt rushed for 1,055 yards this season to become the first Aztec to twice rush for 1,000 yards in a season. He finished second in the conference behind Dabby Dawson of Wyoming (1,125 yards).

Three Aztecs were named to the second team, including junior wide receiver Monty Gilbreath, who was a first-team selection last year as a return specialist. Also named to the second team were senior cornerback Mario Mitchell and senior center Kevin Wells.

WOMEN’S BASKETBALL

Candida Echeverria, a 5-foot 7-inch junior guard, was named West Coast Athletic Conference player of the week. She led the University of San Diego with 40 points in 2 games in the Downeast Auto Classic at the University of Maine Orono.

MEN’S TENNIS

The San Diego All-College Tennis tournament, sponsored by the University of San Diego, begins today at 1 with matches on USD’s west courts. The tournament, featuring players from all San Diego-area community and 4-year colleges, continues through the singles final at 9 a.m. Sunday and doubles final at 11 a.m. on the USD west courts.
