A Fountain Valley man was wounded by police officers early Tuesday after he fled a robbery scene and tried to run over officers with his car, police said.

A man wearing a ski mask walked into a 7-Eleven at 10545 Slater Ave., pointed a screwdriver at the clerk’s chest and demanded cash, Police Sgt. Larry Griswold said. When the clerk refused to give him money, the robber fled in a 1976 Chevrolet El Camino.

Officers responding chased the car to the corner of Euclid Street and Petal Avenue, where the fleeing driver crashed into a block wall.

“He then backed into a police car and attempted to drive over an officer,” Griswold said. Police fired twice, striking the man in the shoulder and hand.

Mark A. Malgieri, 27, was treated at Fountain Valley Regional Hospital & Medical Center, then was booked on suspicion of attempted robbery and assault with a deadly weapon on a police officer. Bail was set at $50,000.

A ski mask and a screwdriver were found inside Malgieri’s car, Griswold said.
