The grizzly bear, once feared near extinction in the contiguous 48 states, has recovered enough that it will be taken off the endangered species list in some areas in the next few years, federal officials said. The grizzly initially will be “delisted” in Glacier National Park and the Bob Marshall Wilderness Area in northern Montana, said Dale Strickland, chairman of the federal-state committee monitoring the bears’ progress. It also could be removed from the federally protected list in the Yellowstone National Park ecosystem of Wyoming and Montana in the next decade, according to Strickland and Chris Servheen, the grizzly bear recovery team’s coordinator.
