Help Sought in Defacing Case

San Diego police are asking two women who may have witnessed the defacing of the House of Israel in Balboa Park to come forward.

Authorities said Friday that they had no suspects in the spray-painting of anti-Semitic slogans on the wall of the Israeli cultural center late Thursday morning.

“It’s going to be much tougher locating the people who did it without the two women coming forward,” police spokesman Dave Cohen said.

The women joggers reported seeing two young men running from the scene, then left without giving further descriptions of the men, Cohen said.

The graffiti, which covered three walls with messages such as “Hitler was right,” swastikas and the initials SWP (for Supreme White Power), was reportedly spray-painted between 11:20 and 11:30 a.m.

Less than two hours later, Cohen said, police found similar graffiti in a men’s restroom less than 100 yards from the Jewish center.

“It was red, fresh paint with the same kind of symbols and markings,” he said, adding that “SWP” is a slogan that has been attributed to Skinheads.

“There’s some sick people out there,” Cohen said.

He said witnesses need not disclose their names, but should call 235-TIPS or the San Diego Police Department.
