Sanders: 328 Yards and 4 TDs

Heisman Trophy winner Barry Sanders scored 4 touchdowns and rushed for a career-high 328 yards to set a National Collegiate Athletic Assn. record Sunday, leading No. 15-ranked Oklahoma State past Texas Tech, 45-42.

Sanders surpassed Marcus Allen’s one-season record of 2,342 rushing yards with a 15-yard sprint with 2:33 left in the first quarter.

The junior tailback rushed 45 times and finished the regular season with 2,624 yards. He gained 174 yards on 23 carries in the first half, but the Cowboys trailed, 21-17, at halftime.

It was his fourth 300-yard game this season and matched the 11th-most yards in a game in NCAA history.

He scored 39 touchdowns this season, another NCAA record.

Oklahoma State (9-2) took a 24-21 lead 2:25 into the second half on an 11-yard pass from Mike Gundy to Hart Lee Dykes. The Cowboys made it 31-21 just 4 minutes later on a 6-yard pass from Gundy to Dykes.

Texas Tech dropped to 5-6.

The Cowboys intercepted a pass by Texas Tech quarterback Billy Joe Tolliver on the first play of the game, setting up the Cowboys’ first touchdown, a 1-yard leap by Sanders.

After Texas Tech went ahead, 14-7, Sanders raced 56 yards for his second touchdown to tie the score.

Cowboy Clay Blanchard extended his own NCAA mark for consecutive extra points to 67.
