Two people were injured Sunday in a fire at a motel, Costa Mesa Fire Department officials said.

Mary Johnson, 25, was treated at Hoag Memorial Hospital Presbyterian for second-degree burns on her face, hands and legs, and Terry Dale, 23, was treated for smoke inhalation and minor facial burns, fire officials said.

Christine Jackson, 25, Shawana Glenn, 3, and Arthur Glenn, 1, were taken to the hospital for observation, officials said. All five were later released.

The three adults and the children, ages 1 and 3, all lived in the two-room apartment at the Sea Breeze Motel on Newport Boulevard, officials said. The 7:20 a.m. fire destroyed the apartment, but it did not spread to other units.

Fire officials suspect that Johnson fell asleep while smoking in bed, although no cigarette residue was found.

“She woke up with her left leg engulfed in flames and grabbed her children, also yelling to a couple of people in the room to get out because of the fire,” Costa Mesa Police Lt. Alan Kent said.

The blaze caused about $10,000 damage to the structure and $5,000 damage to the contents, fire officials said.
