The New York Islanders, off to their worst start in 15 years, fired Coach Terry Simpson and replaced him with Al Arbour, who coached the team to 4 straight Stanley Cups in the early 1980s.
The Islanders, who won the Patrick Division title last season, Simpson’s second with the club, are 7-18-2, last in the division, and tied with Chicago for the fewest points in the NHL. They have lost 8 straight games, including a 4-3 home loss to Boston Tuesday night in which they blew a 3-2 third-period lead.
