Disaster Task Force Revived to Help Victims With Tax Relief

In the aftermath of this week’s disastrous fires, Los Angeles County Assessor John Lynch announced Friday the revival of a special disaster task force to help fire victims qualify for property tax relief.

Under the program, Lynch said owners of fire- or wind-damaged homes or businesses can report any destruction involving taxable property and request a reassessment form. A review of taxable property is allowed if it experiences at least $5,000 in damage because of a disaster, he said.

“The same special group which dealt with tax reduction assistance for the victims of the 1987 Whittier earthquake and the floods of last January will now handle forms to help property owners victimized by this calamity,” Lynch said.

Property owners can write directly to the assessor’s office at the downtown Hall of Administration, Lynch said, or call (213) 974-3332 or 974-8658 for further information.
