Local News in Brief : Car Hits Pole; 1,600 Buildings Lose Power
About 1,600 homes and businesses in sections of North Hollywood and Van Nuys were blacked out for about 4 hours early Saturday when a vehicle struck a power pole and caused tangled wires to short-circuit.
The crash occurred at 10:55 p.m. Friday at Oxnard Street and Fulton Avenue. The tangled wires knocked out a power distributing station a few blocks away, said Ed Freudenburg, a spokesman for the Los Angeles Department of Water and Power.
Another 12,000 DWP customers were without power for 8 minutes after the crash, Freudenburg said.
Los Angeles police said the blackout affected traffic signals in the area and contributed to a collision between a pickup truck and a car at Coldwater Canyon Avenue and Oxnard Street.
No injuries were reported in either crash.
