A DANGEROUS PROFESSION

The deaths of three Los Angeles Police Department officers Monday when two squad cars collided downtown raised to 173 the number of LAPD officers who died in the line of duty since 1907. Of those, 86 officers were killed by suspects, 36 in car crashes, 31 in motorcycle collisions, 6 in helicopter accidents and 14 in other incidents, including bomb explosions.
