Eight secondary schools in San Diego County have been named state winners in the first leg of their quest for federal government recognition as outstanding schools, the State Department of Education announced Friday.

The schools are: Fallbrook High; Mt. Carmel High and Meadowbrook Middle in Poway; Vista High; Valley Center Middle; Oak Grove Middle in Jamul; Point Loma High in San Diego and Montgomery Junior High in the South Bay.

The eight schools--the largest number of any county in California--will now compete nationally among about 500 submitted by all states to the U. S. Department of Education. California is submitting the names of 47 schools out of 115 that competed at the state level.

Federal administrators will now screen the schools on the basis of their written applications, after which the top scorers will be visited by review teams of principals whose schools won honors in previous years. Winners will be announced in May.

In 1984, Fallbrook High won a similar National Secondary School award and Meadowbrook Middle also won in 1985. Among county schools not nominated by the state this year, Torrey Pines High, Orange Glen High and Southwest High won the award in 1987, Borrego Springs High in 1985, and Chula Vista High, Santana High and Twin Peaks Middle in 1984.

Federal recognition of secondary schools takes place in alternate years with a similar program for elementary schools.
