Local News in Brief : Proposal Links Jobs to City Contracts
Many companies wishing to do business with the city of Los Angeles will have to provide training and jobs for the unskilled and economically disadvantaged under a plan proposed Tuesday by Mayor Tom Bradley.
Firms vying for city contracts worth more than $500,000 would have to find opportunities to hire unemployed people under the city’s Job Training Partnership Act program, which now has 18,000 people enrolled.
Under the program, partial funding for the jobs comes from federal aid administered by the city and the non-governmental Private Industry Council.
Companies seeking city contracts would be evaluated in part on the number of jobs they make available for the disadvantaged. The city already evaluates firms in part on the number of women and minorities they employ or use as subcontractors.
