Ann Wilk, 56; Inglewood Councilwoman, Former School Official

Inglewood City Councilwoman Ann Wilk has died after suffering two heart attacks while visiting relatives in Massachusetts.

Wilk, 56, had been in a coma and had not been expected to recover after being stricken Dec. 10 in Fall River, Mass., her birthplace. She died Friday.

Wilk was only the second woman elected to the City Council in the 100-year history of Inglewood. A 38-year resident of Inglewood, she defeated a two-term incumbent to win election to the council in 1987.

She previously served as a member of the Inglewood Unified School District’s board from 1979 to 1983. Wilk was an early leader in the fight against aircraft noise at Los Angeles International Airport and was active in several organizations, including the Inglewood Philharmonic and the Inglewood-Airport Area Chamber of Commerce.

A special election will be held with regular city elections April 4 to fill the council vacancy.
