Barry Switzer, the Oklahoma football coach, responding to a 3-year probation imposed by the National Collegiate Athletic Assn., said that he won his three national championships fairly.
“I feel comfortable in saying and knowing that I have never asked any of my coaches to go out and offer any inducement to any athlete we have ever recruited,” Switzer said.
Under the sanctions, Oklahoma will have no bowl appearances for 2 years and no live televised games next season, and the number of recruits who can sign with the Sooners will be cut from 25 to 18 for 2 years.
