The Orange County coroner’s office today identified two young men who died Wednesday when the stolen car in which they were riding slammed into a bridge abutment near Brea.

Jay Thompson, 20, of Cerritos and Damon Tye, 19, of Anaheim were killed instantly inside a Honda Prelude, which was later determined to have been stolen, police said.

A Fullerton police sergeant attempted to stop the car for speeding as it entered the Orange Freeway at Yorba Linda Boulevard about 2:45 a.m. Wednesday, Fullerton Police Lt. Ron Rowell said. But after he pulled the car over and approached it on foot, the car sped off.

He chased the vehicle on the freeway, saw it exit at Tonner Canyon Road and then came upon the accident scene on southbound Brea Canyon Road.

“Due to the heavy rain and high speed, it appears they slid off the road,” said Officer Keith Thornhill of the California Highway Patrol, which is investigating the accident.
