RELIGION : Churches Mobilize Aid to Armenia

NEW YORK — American churches have mobilized relief efforts to help the stricken people of Armenia, devastated by an earthquake.
Catholic Relief Services authorized an immediate grant of $100,000, while Church World Service, relief arm of the Protestant-Eastern Orthodox National Council of Churches, coordinated shipment of $1-million worth of medical supplies, blankets and winter clothing.
CWS dispatched a four-member team to the stricken region. Member denominations chipped into the operation, including an initial grant of $20,000 by United Methodists and $25,000 by the Christian Reformed Church.
Mormon officials also presented a check for $100,000 at the Soviet Embassy in Washington, saying that it was only an initial contribution.
Lutheran World Relief sent $25,000, Greek Orthodoxy $10,000 and the Catholic Medical Mission Board $27,116 worth of medicines.
