This nation’s decision to resume diplomatic ties with Israel is a significant step toward reaching a negotiated peace in the Middle East, Israeli Ambassador-designate Arieh Ivtsan said Friday.

“The re-establishment of relations will take us further on the road toward a negotiated peace,” Ivtsan told reporters after the formal opening of Israel’s embassy in Nairobi.

“We have reasons to believe--I can’t say whether they are strong reasons or less strong reasons--that other countries in East Africa will join Kenya,” Ivtsan said. Kenya broke off relations in 1973 after the Yom Kippur War in line with an Organization of Africa Unity resolution.
