1988 THE YEAR IN REVIEW : Illegal Aliens:
O ur readers wrote letters throughout 1988 expressing their viewpoints on a variety of issues. Here are condensed versions of some of those letters. We appreciate their taking the time to share their viewpoints and look forward to hearing from you in 1989. We could allow ourselves to believe that the police sweeps for “illegals” is good for the community. The truth is that this treatment of Latinos is part of a very dangerous xenophobia that can spring up from anyone, especially if our “leaders” encourage this ugly, irrational hatred of those who look or act different.
Orange County is my home. It pains me to see this flagrant disrespect of human rights. Maybe the real sweeps that are needed are inside of us, where the dreadful germ of prejudice sometimes grows.
