Sewage Spills Into Bay at Pacific Beach

About 2,100 gallons of raw sewage flowed into Sail Bay on Sunday as a result of a sewer main break in Pacific Beach, the county Department of Health Services reported.

The sewer main, located in an alley behind the 4500 block of Ingraham Street, broke at 1:32 p.m., sending an estimated 25 gallons of sewage per minute into a nearby storm drain, department spokesman John Misleh said.

The break was repaired by 4:30 p.m., but the cause of the damage was unknown, he said.

The sewage discharged into the bay at the foot of Fanuel Street, and the area to 100 feet on either side has been posted as a health hazard for at least 48 hours, Misleh said.
