Local News in Brief : 1 Dead, 1 Wounded in Gang Shooting

A man was killed and his cousin wounded in a shooting in Willowbrook involving gang members who mistook the victims for rivals, Los Angeles police said Wednesday.

Charles Valentine, 22, and his cousin, Bryant Valentine, 21, of Los Angeles, had pulled into an apartment parking lot at 2000 E. El Segundo Blvd., planning to visit relatives, when they were approached by two members of the Crips gang late Tuesday, Lt. Joe Hladky said.

The Crips, who control the neighborhood, believed the pair were rival Bloods gang members and shot them, he said.

Charles Valentine was dead on arrival at Martin Luther King Jr./Drew Medical Center, Hladky said. Bryant Valentine was in good condition with gunshot wounds to the leg.
