Here is how turf writers, track racing secretaries and the Daily Racing Form voted in the election for the 1988 Eclipse Awards. For the horses, a 10-5-1 system was used for first-, second- and third-place finishes within each voting group. In other categories, 1 point was given for a vote from each group, and the steeplechase and breeder awards were determined by committees:

Sprinter--Gulch 30, Mining 15, Play the King 2, Afleet 1.
