A man who escaped from the Nevada State Prison in Carson City in 1983 has been captured in Sherman Oaks, Nevada officials said Friday.
Gregory McWilliams, 35, was living under an alias and was taken into custody at an apartment without incident by Los Angeles County authorities Wednesday. Investigators found $280,000 in cash, small quantities of drugs, two late-model Mercedes and a 1988 Jeep Eagle.
McWilliams escaped by impersonating another inmate who was to be released on parole. At the time he was serving a 55-year prison term for robbery, attempted robbery and battery in Las Vegas.
McWilliams, who was using the name of James G. Johnson Jr., is being held in the Los Angeles County Jail without bail pending extradition to Nevada.
