College Basketball Roundup : Cal Lutheran Blown Out in Montana for 2nd Consecutive Night

Coach Larry Lopez hoped that his Cal Lutheran men’s basketball team would use its 2-game swing through Billings, Mont., to gather momentum for its Golden State Athletic Conference opener Tuesday at Westmont.

Instead, the Kingsmen lost 2 nonconference games to Eastern Montana to extend their losing streak to 4 games.

Guard Steve deLaveaga, who averages 27 points a game, was held to 29 points for the 2 games combined. He scored 17 points Saturday, but the Yellowjackets downed the Kingsmen, 86-58.

Trailing, 49-37, at halftime, the Kingsmen (6-8) only fell further behind, shooting 19% and scoring 21 points in the second half.

Guard Jeff Logsdon scored 13 points and Mike Demeter had 6 rebounds for the Kingsmen.

Mike Morgan scored a game-high 20 points for the Yellowjackets (12-2).

In other games:

Santa Monica 82, Valley 76--Santa Monica, which is averaging more than 100 points a game, jumped to an early lead and held off the Monarchs in a Western State Conference game at Valley.

Santa Monica (17-3, 2-0 in conference play), ranked third in the state, was led by Von Shuler’s 27 points. Tory Stephens led Valley with 22 points.

Oral Elrington added 17 points and Joey Manliguis scored 15 for the Monarchs.

Moorpark 67, Santa Barbara 61--Bruce Watson scored 20 points and Alex Porter added 17 to lead the Raiders in the WSC game at Santa Barbara.

The Raiders (11-7, 2-0) led, 36-29, at halftime and held their lead throughout the second period. They converted 20 of 50 field-goal attempts and hit 16 of 26 free throws. Greg Taylor led Moorpark rebounders with 13.

WOMEN

Moorpark 64, Santa Barbara 60--Moorpark rode a 10-0 scoring spree in the last 7 minutes to pull ahead and clinch the WSC victory at Santa Barbara.

The Lady Raiders have won 3 in a row and 15 consecutive conference games over 2 seasons. Kerrie Marshall had 16 points and 11 rebounds for Moorpark (13-5).

Mary Bittner added 11 points and Cindy Wiley had 10 for Moorpark.

Canyons 69, Glendale 64--Canyons trailed by 14 in the first half but rallied to win its WSC opener at home. Canyons (2-9 overall) launched an 18-2 run to pull to within 33-32 at halftime. Debbie Barnard of Kennedy High recorded 5 steals in the 5-minute stretch. Canyons had 13 turnovers in the first half but only 5 in the second half. Canyons built a 9-point lead after intermission and held on.

Tressie Millender scored 23 points and had 14 rebounds for Canyons. Barnard, who made 8 of 14 field-goal attempts, scored 27 points and had 9 rebounds.

Santa Monica 75, Valley 60--Sandrine Rocher came off the bench to lead Valley (15-4, 1-1) with 14 points, and Ruth Aguilar added 10 points and 10 rebounds in the WSC game at Valley.

The Lady Monarchs (15-4, 1-1 in conference play) trailed by 6 points at halftime and were outscored, 36-27, in the second period.
