Women’s Basketball Roundup : Eighth-Ranked Stanford Outlasts UCLA, 73-71

Eighth-ranked Stanford hit 6 free throws down the stretch and the Cardinal held off UCLA, 73-71, Saturday night in a Pacific 10 Conference women’s basketball game at Pauley Pavilion.

UCLA (4-7 overall, 1-1 in the Pac-10) took a 33-32 lead at halftime when freshman guard DeDe Mosman hit a shot at the buzzer from midcourt.

Stanford (10-2, 2-0) led most of the second half, but the Bruins pulled to within 64-63 with 2:04 left before Jennifer Azzi hit a 3-pointer, Evon Asforis hit a jumper and the Cardinal made its crucial free throws.

Azzi had 20 points, and Katy Steding added 18 and 7 rebounds for Stanford. Althea Ford had 12 points and 7 rebounds for UCLA.

CS Long Beach 113, San Jose State 72--Penny Toler scored 24 points and Shameil Coleman added 20 as the 11th-ranked 49ers trounced the Spartans in a Big West Conference game at San Jose.

Traci Waites added 18 points for Long Beach (9-4, 4-0) and Dana Wilkerson had 15. Lora Alexander had 31 points and 9 rebounds for San Jose (3-9, 0-3).

California 83, USC 61--Trisha Stafford had 19 points and 15 rebounds as the Bears downed the Trojans in a Pac-10 game at Loyola Marymount.

Laura Baker added 18 points for Cal (6-6, 1-1), which ended a 4-game losing streak.

Rosalind Hodge had 19 points and 9 rebounds for USC (4-7, 0-2), which lost its third straight. USC played without leading scorer Cherie Nelson (27.1), who was suspended earlier in the week for disciplinary reasons.
