A Cambria man pleaded guilty in Los Angeles federal court to a charge that he helped two friends shoot at sea otters while on a scuba diving trip north of Morro Bay in August, 1987. William Walker, 31, admitted to one count of conspiracy to harass, hunt or kill sea otters by tying a boat to a buoy to steady it while his companions fired. The other two defendants, Bruce Magnusen, 35, and David Perry, 21, both of Cambria, pleaded innocent to conspiracy and two counts of actually hunting or shooting a threatened species. Trial is set for March 7. Walker, who is to be sentenced Feb. 13 by U.S. District Judge Richard Gadbois Jr., faces a maximum term of a year in prison and a $100,000 fine.
