A Mira Mesa flight instructor and his student were injured in a two-plane collision Tuesday over Ramona airport, authorities said.

Instructor Vance Breise, 51, underwent surgery for abdominal injuries and was in serious condition Tuesday night in the intensive care unit at Scripps Memorial Hospital in La Jolla.

Douglas Matson, 47, of El Cajon, Breise’s student, was also in intensive care in fair condition with head and ankle injuries, hospital spokesman Mike Dabney said.

The Associated Press reported that a second plane, flown by Don Kohorst, landed atop the instructor’s plane, cutting off its tail, as both were attempting to land while still about 20 feet in the air.

Kohorst was not injured.
