Blue Shield of California has announced a $2-a-month cut in its rates for so-called “Medigap” coverage carried by 60,000 elderly California customers to help them defray medical expenses not covered by Medicare. This amounts to a 2% to 4% decrease in premiums, depending on the coverage, a spokesman said Monday.

“In line with recent expansion of Medicare benefits effective Jan. 1, Blue Shield will roll back rates by $2 per month on its series of ‘Coronet’ Medicare supplement health plans,” the announcement said.
