Downey : Proposed Law Sets Fine for Blocking Sweepers
Downey residents whose cars block city street sweepers will soon be fined under an ordinance tentatively approved Tuesday by the City Council.
The ordinance, which is expected to win final approval at the council’s next meeting Jan. 24, provides for the posting of signs restricting parking to clear the way for street sweepers. Violators of the parking restrictions would be cited and probably fined $19, the current fine for illegal parking in Downey, Police Chief Pete Stone said. The exact fine is still to be determined, Stone said.
The program, including the cost of signs, equipment and personnel for enforcement, is projected to cost the city $384,494 during the first year, according to a report by William A. Ralph, director of public works. The citations will generate revenue and city officials hope to break even on set-up and operational costs of the program after five years, Ralph said.
Ralph said it will take a maximum of six months to post signs and begin enforcement if the ordinance wins final approval.
