WCAC Roundup : St. Mary’s Begins WCAC Title Drive With Victory Over Winless Portland

St. Mary’s, one of the favorites to win the West Coast Athletic Conference basketball title, opened league play with an easy 71-45 victory over winless Portland Friday night at Moraga, Calif.

Portland (0-14) closed within 46-36 with 12:33 remaining, but St. Mary’s (13-1) then outscored the Pilots, 25-9, to assure them of their best start since the 1917-18 team was 15-0.

It was the 20th consecutive loss for Portland, which also was playing its first WCAC game.

Gonzaga 71, U. San Diego 66--The Bulldogs (10-4) had to go to overtime to win the league opener for both teams at San Diego. Doug Spradley made a 3-point shot with 1:07 left in overtime, then hit 2 free throws with 8 seconds remaining for the win. The Toreros are 5-8.
