Preserving Lands Held by Irvine Co.

Share

In his thoughtful letter, “Open Space Seen as a Key County Priority” (Jan. 8), George Baskevitch expressed the hope that large portions of the Irvine Co.’s coastal land holdings be preserved for open space.

In fact, the specific land to which he referred has been committed for preservation: Emerald Canyon, as well as Irvine Co. land between Emerald Canyon and Laguna Canyon Road--extending from Laguna Beach north into the proposed San Joaquin Hills Corridor--is included in our Irvine Coast and Laguna Laurel plans, and will be dedicated to the county on a phased schedule outlined in development agreements for both projects.

The Laguna Laurel open-space element preserves 1,350 acres. The Irvine Coast dedication area involves 7,234 acres for open space.

This is an unprecedented commitment of some of the most stunning and valuable remaining coastal property in Southern California. And consistent with the wistful spirit of Mr. Baskevitch’s letter, its preservation as open space is a legacy that the Irvine Co. takes great pride in leaving for the enjoyment of current and future generations of Orange County residents.
