WCAC Roundup : Portland Beats San Diego, 57-54, to End Losing Streak at 21 Games

Portland snapped the NCAA Division I’s longest losing streak at 21 games Saturday night with a 57-54 victory over the University of San Diego at San Diego.

The Pilots’ last victory came against San Diego last Feb. 6 at Portland.

Portland is 1-14 overall and 1-1 in the West Coast Athletic Conference. San Diego fell to 5-9 and 0-2 after its fourth consecutive loss.

Bart Koenitzer made 2 baskets, including a 5-foot turnaround jumper with 1:30 left that put the Pilots ahead for good, 55-54.

St. Mary’s 67, Gonzaga 45--Erick Newman and James Dailey each scored 15 points to pace the Gaels to victory at Moraga, Calif.

Gonzaga pulled within 6 points with 11:18 left, 45-39, but the Gaels scored 16 straight points, 7 by Newman, to put the game away.

St. Mary’s (14-1 overall and 2-0 in the WCAC) out-rebounded the Bulldogs (10-5, 1-1), 37-21.
