WEEKEND BOX OFFICE : ‘Rain Man’ Still Pouring It On

Disney/Touchstone’s “Beaches,” starring Bette Midler and Barbara Hershey, came on strong in wide release over the weekend, grossing $5.2 million at 706 theaters, an average of $7,309 per screen. But the most impressive box office results continued to come from MGM/UA’S “Rain Man,” starring Dustin Hoffman and Tom Cruise. That film grossed $10.1 million at 1,482 theaters, an average of $6,823 per screen.
* MGM/UA’s other release, “January Man,” had a poor showing on its opening weekend. The Norman Jewison production, starring Kevin Kline and Susan Sarandon, grossed only $1.7 million at 876 theaters, an average of $1,959 per screen.
