Sports : Despondent Wilander Says He’s Contemplating Break From Game
No. 1-ranked tennis star Mats Wilander said today that he is contemplating a complete break from the game after his stunning straight-sets defeat by India’s Ramesh Krishnan in the second round of the Australian Open.
The defending champion offered few excuses for his 6-3, 6-2, 7-6 defeat, which followed a disappointing finish to the most successful year of his career. “It was probably the worst I’ve ever played,” a despondent Wilander admitted.
“It has been very difficult to motivate myself after winning the U.S. Open. . . . I’m definitely considering taking a layoff from the game. I am due to play in the Davis Cup after the Australian Open but I don’t know about that yet.”
